Ethyl M. Sawyer founded the Sawyer School in 1916. Guided by the employment needs of the business market; the first Sawyer School in downtown Los Angeles established a tradition of excellence in office training.
As our nation’s economy grew and changed, so did the Sawyer School, ever responsive to the needs of the business community. International Industries, Inc., acquired Sawyer in 1967, and created a subsidiary organization: The Sawyer Schools. Under this organization, the Providence branch began its operation in September 1969. In 1975, Academic Enterprises, Inc., a Rhode Island corporation, acquired The Sawyer School (Providence).
Growth in career training led to moving the main campus to Pawtucket, Rhode Island. In 1990, The Pelham Educational Group, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Academic Enterprises, d/b/a The Sawyer School was formed as a Connecticut corporation. In 1994, two branches were opened- the Hamden Branch and the Hartford Branch.
In 1999 Academic Enterprises, Inc. purchased the Butler Business School (Founded as Brown’s Business College in 1900) in Bridgeport and took it into its second century, continuing the fine tradition established through 100 continuous years of operation.
Today The Sawyer School offers coeducational career training as when Ethyl M. Sawyer initially established the first school.
"Butler was a fantastic school for me. At Butler, I was trained to be a Medical Assistant, and because of it I have been able to save peoples' lives. Another great thing about Butler was that it opened doors for me. I'm in college now, and I know which way my life is going and where I want to go."
